Kabul Returns to Normal

Okay, the image is actually from an earlier incident of rioting in Kabul in 2002, but it will serve nicely to illustrate the recent outbreak.

A. It contains what appears to be a military vehicle.

B. The military vehicle appears to be the focus of the hostile attentions of the assembled rioters.

Today's festivities apparently began with a U.S. Military convoy (travelling at high speed as part of troop protection protocol) running into as many as a dozen local vehicles. Tempers flared. The troops tried to drive their way out. More injuries. Police arrived. Shots (whose not clear) fired. Afghanis died.

This sparks several hours of gunfire, gun battles, RPG attacks and general hostility in downtown Kabul, which, regular readers will recall, was recently described by U.S. spokeman Tom Collins as "generally, relatively speaking, pretty safe." Still too soon for casualty reports today.

No mention so far in the American MSM on this yarn, but truthout actually has a man on the ground and the Times has pretty good coverage.

Its Memorial Day. Be proud of the sacrifices brave and dedicated young Americans are making today that will be honored on Memorial Days to come and
