What rhymes with "Freaking Mess"? Oh yeah...Iraq.

Judy Miller, Bill Frist, Tom DeLay oh my...it sure can be fun to forget that we're at War because of these power-hungry monkeys...
Read the latest about the bombings here and here...

I'm going to name my first-born ..."Fitzgerald"

So Judy Miller finally sings. The details are all over HuffPo so we'll let Ariana & Co. handle that. Kudos to Billmon for a great image we swiped. I still want to know what the hell is John Boltons connection and how the hell is Dick Cheney avoiding any slime from this? I'm also on pins and needles waiting for the Penthouse Judy Miller spread...I hear they're offering hig six-figures for her low five-figure frame...
I'm not holding my breath on the Republicans imploding as that would leave the Dems and I'm still smarting over Clinton...Where have you gone Joe DiMaggio?

Arctic Meltdown Update

We promised you the delayed report on shrinking Arctic ice as soon as available and here it is, straight from the National Snow and Ice Data Center and it is not pretty. Record low levels of ice coverage, a continuing downward trend, positive feedback loops accelerating the process, damage to wildlife and the looming probability of an ice-free Arctic.
The good news ? The fabled Northwest Passage is ice free at last !

What's Our Second Priority ?

Given that we are spending a billion dollars a week (give or take) in Iraq and that our "first priority" is training and equpping the police and security forces, how can it be useful for the Bakersfield police to donate surplus equipment to the police in Mosul ? Surely two and a half years in we have supplied the police in the major cities with basic equipment. Haven't we ?

Holy Justice Batman...

Tom Delay (R- Tx.) charged with conspiracy...Yes, this makes the Zoo happy.

Whither thou Karl?

Stay Naked.

And I think to myself...what a wonderful world...

Ahhh, the sweet smell of fall...rotting leaves, fecund materials abounding, republicans devolving into some lower form of life...I wish everyday made me so happy...

In short...Tom DeLay (R-Tx) may be charged with conspiracy...

The Jack Abramoff investigation now includes charges of murder. According to the Washington Post, Abramoff and partner Adam Kidan bought SunCruz casinos off of Konsatantinos Boulis in Sep. 2000...pretty straightforward so far...until Boulis is gunned down in Feb, 2001...two of the men charged with the killing were 'consultants' on Adam Kidan...which just looks bad.

And finally, Bill Frist continues to field questions about his questionable stock sale...

Hearts and Minds...

Umm...I don't know if anyone is paying attention but there appears to be a civil war brewing in Iraq...according to CBS News (usually one of the last to know), there is a low-level (meaning they don't have warplanes....yet) conflict going on with increasing numbers of bodies 'turning up' in Iraq...Sunnis blame the Shite dominated police who vehemently deny the accusations...

Free Land in Kansas...

This is just a strange piece of information. You don't like where you're living? Want a change? They're giving away FREE land in Kansas...

And my favorite story of the week but only because Karl Rove hasn't been frog-marched out of the White House yet...the investigation into GOP lobbyist Jack Abramoff is moving up into the upper reaches of the Republican leadership...Bloomberg does a great job catching you up-to-speed here.

O Say can you say...

What War is to me...

Meet Hart Viges. He is a solider in the United States Army. He fought in Iraq...unfortunately, to read his story you need to read British newspapers like the Independent.....

Also in the Zoo...Define: Rendition. I hate stories like this...they remind me that there really is a 'they' and 'they' will pack you up in a lovely Gulfstream IV to have your testicles fried by very hard men in very cold places...

Arctic Ice Report Delayed

We recently announced the end of the global warming debate based on a report on the shrinking of the ice coverage in the Arctic (see below). That report by the National Snow and Ice Data Center has been delayed until later in the month.
The Zoo will track it from the source and keep you posted. Please excuse our inadvertent error.

Plamegate: All roads lead to...John Bolton?

I admit it. I love the Valerie Plame Scandal...it's my second favorite scandal so far, Iran/Contra being the first. Ariana Huffington is reporting that the target of Special Prosecutor Fitzgeralds investigation may be our non-confirmed Ambassador to the UN John Bolton...which is too sweet for words...Bolton and Rove may go down in the same stroke? That would be Sistine Chapel kind of beautiful...
It should be pointed out that Justin Raimondo posited just this outcome on Antiwar.com back in July of of this year...

War on Terror? No. Poverty? No. Porn? Oh yes baby...

I sat down to write about the British troops storming an Iraqi police station in Basra, adding fuel to a very explosive situation in the formerly calm British controlled part of Iraq, I was also going to riff on a new strain of super weed but am stunned stupid by the governements insistence on pursuing a 'War on Porn'. That link takes you to a well-written op-ed piece in the Washington Post but it stuns my sentience to see this administration diverting resources for this...

The Zoo salutes one of the Greats....

While the major news outlets will focus on the 'nazi hunter' section of Simon Wiesenthals resume...the zoo wants to remember his profound humanity and the lessons he taught...namely, Life does count, there is a right and a wrong, justice equals mercy...we don't have enough Simon Wiesenthals...or at least those who realize their profound humanity...You will be missed...

Ummmm...Hey Iran!...Duck...:)

Let's see...The United States and Russia just issued a dual 'no nukes for Iran' statement with Putin taking a notable softer stance then Bush but then again, he did so on Iraq also...and now we have the secong leg of the Coalition of the Willing making growly noises at Iran...British Foreign Secretary Jack Straw described the Iranian position that they have an 'inalienable right' to produce nuclear energy as 'unhelpful' and 'disappointing'...which is Britishese for 'stop now you mad buggers'...I can almost hear the launching of the cruise missiles now...

Know thine enemy...

Stay Naked...
The Zoo has come to the conclusion that, despite a fervant wish on our part to create harmony, we are faced with a seemingly intractable opponent. Are we talking about the insurgents? No. The Taliban? No. The islamic jihadist movement? No. We're talking about our homegrown form of virulent, well-organized, well-funded, well-trained shock troops...they don't really have a singular name or at least one that has stuck. 'They'
are not the 'neo-cons' people like to rant about. 'They' are ideological right wing christian shock troops...men and women pouring out of right-wing think tanks, universities and a wide variety of indoctrination centers. 'They', while howling about a 'gay agenda', are systematically going about changing our proud governement into a theocracy...Today, we chose to illustrate who we think 'they' are in the person of Michael Schwartz. He is currently the Chief of Staff to Sen. Tom Coburn (R-Ok.) Here's a sampling of his thoughts on judges:
"I'm a radical! I'm a real extremist. I don't want to impeach judges. I want to impale them!"
"Specter (Senate Judiciary Chairman Arlen Specter) is the Great Satan, of course," Schwartz remarked. "But still, I'd rather have him as committee chair than [Utah Republican Senator] Orrin Hatch, because Specter knows how to terrorize the opposition."
Most of the information for this posting comes from an excellent article written for the Nation by Max Blumenthal that you can find here.

Galloway/ Hitchens Debate on the Iraq War

This is an absolute must see/listen...you can download it off of Democracy Now (it's on the right hand side) or off of Christopher Hitchens Website (it's the second link down at the time of this posting. It says: link for live audio of Hitchens-Galloway debate

Enjoy and Stay Naked.

You don't have a car?

Well then you're shit out of luck in a disaster. Mojo features a great story here by Allison Stein Wellner on how evacuation plans around the US are predicated on YOU having a car to evacuate with...this of course leaves out the 23 million Americans who don't have cars...Is this a surprise? No. In the case of New Orleans, they were aware of this problem a full year in advance of Katrina. In Sep, 2004, New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin held a press conference in which he stated he could not order a mandatory evacuation for Hurricane IVAN because he had no way of evacuating people without cars...(remember the buses)...what happens when a natural or not-so-natural disaster hits a city that hasn't thought out what would happen?...

Insanity, Thy Name is DeLay...

Fresh off of ingestion of massive amounts of piles of cocaine, House Majority Leader Tom Delay (R-Tx.)declared that the days of wasteful government spending are over. Asked point blank if what he meant was that government could not run any more efficiently he said,"Yes, after 11 years of Republican majority we've pared it down pretty good."

I pause here to let that sink in...

How long did it take for the laughs to die down? Well, reports are the OMB had to shut down due to so many oblique muscle strains...

A strained thanks to the normally loopy Washtington Times and equally loopy Drudge...

Have we lost the War in Iraq?

Noted Anti-war activist James Carroll, son of the founding director of the Defense Intelligence Agency thinks so. He even wrote so in September 2003. Read his illuminating interview here at one of our favorite blogs, Toms Disptach.

We're on your side...but do things differently...

Afghan President Hamid Karzai certainly sent shockwaves through the Katrina battered Bush administration with the following quote,"I believe we have to go to the sources of it, where terrorists are trained, where terrorists are prompted up." What is he talking about? Pakistan. Karzai denied he meant Pakistan but nobody is buying. Pakistans response? We'll build a fence...

New Orleans "Unsafe for a decade"

Oh yeah? According to who? Hugh Kaufman, an expert on toxic waste and environmental disasters at the EPA. He's been with the EPA for 35 Years, since it's inception and is currently a senior policy analyst in it's Office of Solids Waste and Emergency response. He accuses the Bush administration of covering up the depth of the problem...

In related news, President Bush promised to assess with damage done by Hurricane Katrina without getting wasted on Budweiser...he was quoted as promising a "sober look" at how federal agencies responded to the disaster. In a not very surprising development, Bush was unaware that FEMA Chief Mike Brown had resigned, "Maybe you know something I don't know, But as you know, we've been working, and I haven't had a chance to get on the phone.'' This follows the White House policy of not telling Bush important things...remember the Cessna scare in DC? :)

Talk about Terrified

A unanimous Court of Appeals held that the government has the power to hold American citizens indefinitely, without charges or trial.
That is you. That is me.
Jose Padilla, the subject of this opinion, was arrested in Chicago. The government says, but has not proved, he is connected to Al Queda. He hasn't been charged with anything. He has been in a Navy prison for three years. He will now remain there until Bush, or some later President, frees him.
How can this be ? Congress gave the President the power when they voted for the Iraq war, so say the Wise Men of the Court of Appeals.
Think about this. Jose Padilla is in jail forever because the President says he is an "enemy combatant". No proof. No trial. Nothing.
The difference between you and him ? Bush hasn't called you an enemy combatant.
Are you terrified yet ?

Democracy NOW!!!...or later...

As reported previously on the Zoo, there are widespread reports of 'extra-judicial exectutions' coming out of Iraq. Ending up in an Iraqi police station is apparently very bad for ones health according to the United Nations which found, "Accounts ... consistently point to the systematic use of torture during interrogations at police stations and within other premises belonging to the Ministry of the Interior," So drive safe Baghdadies...

Also, Project Censored has come out with it's TOP 10 CENSORED STORIES...always a good read.

The Stock Market...:Brought to you by the US Govt.

Those damn Canadians are at it again...first they accused the central bank of manipulating gold prices...and now they accuse the US Government of fiddling with the stock market

Insurgency or Hurricane?

Some days...I'm just sad...

About time! Send in the Firefighters to....

Hand out FEMA fliers??? The Salt Lake Tribune is reporting that 1,000 firefighters sent to the disaster along the Gulf Coast are being trained in 'sexual harrassment' and will be deployed to hand out FEMA fliers and answer shell-shocked residents queries with...call 1-800-621-FEMA...

*sigh*...someone wake me when Bob Denver dies...

Republicrat Clinton pledges to 'go after' oil companies...

Sen. Hilary Clinton promised to "go after the oil companies and oil speculators". In related news, she still supports the war in Iraq...

Barbara Bush to Hurricane Victims: Congrats!!

"What I’m hearing which is sort of
scary is they all want to stay in Texas. Everyone is
so overwhelmed by the hospitality.

"And so many of the people in the arena here, you
know, were underprivileged anyway, so this--this (she
chuckles slightly)
is working very well for them."

You can't make this stuff up:)

Speaking of Diasters...yeah, we knew...

A self-inquiry by the Defense department has found 5 more people who say they saw a slide in an intelligence briefing of Mohammad Atta, the alleged ringleader of the 9/11 attacks a full year before 9/11...the slide itself has not been found.

Lest we forget. One year ago, in the Russian town of Beslan, Russian security forces opened fire in circumstances that are still under investigation in the now-famous school siege. 186 children died. Their parents met with Russian President Putin today...

The Zoo sends it's prayers to those families..
